Surprised to see Terry Dene still recording in the sixties. I thought his career was over by about 1959.
He was one of the first British teen pop idols (he arrived on the pop scene after Tommy Steele, but preceded Cliff Richard and Marty Wilde), and made headlines by constantly getting drunk and into fights, so he can claim to be the first British pop star with a bad boy reputation.
He was called up for National Service, but was given a hard time by his fellow recruits and couldn't hack it, so was demobbed after only a few weeks for the sake of his psychological health. Only doing a few weeks of National Service instead of the full two years did not impress the tabloid press who went out of their way to destroy his career, and pretty soon that career was effectively over, so as I have already mentioned, I'm surprised to see him still recording in the sixties. - #3155Surprised to see Terry Dene still recording in the sixties. Cheers for that tbh id never heard of him, before my time and general taste in music. - #3156Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #24.
Four tracks originally submitted to the thread on pages 93 to 96 respectively.
The Scott Bedford Four - How Does It Feel (1965)
Genre: Pop Rock
Original thread page: 93
Date originally submitted: 6th January 2014
Original poster: Randy Gibbons
Comments:
This is a very nice track from the Scott Bedford Four, an obscure American band who remind me a little of the Searchers, while their singer (Scott Bedford, presumably) reminds me a little of Gene Pitney, a combination that gives them a rather interesting sound.
Frida Boccara - Through The Eyes Of A Child (1969)
Genre: Eurovision Pop
Original thread page: 94
Date originally submitted: 29th January 2014
Original poster: mushymanrob
Comments:
The result of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest was perhaps the most farcical in the entire history of the event. The entries from four nations (France, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK) all tied for first place, and as no tie-break mechanism existed at the time, all four were declared as co-winners.
The French entry was a song entitled Un Jour Un Enfant sung by Frida Boccara, and Through The Eyes Of A Child is the English language version of that song.
Of the four songs that won in 1969, Frida Boccara's beautiful ballad is unquestionably my favourite. The fact that it didn't win the Contest outright, but had to share the honours with three other (imho inferior) songs does rather annoy me, and the fact that one of those other three songs was Boom Bang A Bang by Lulu just adds insult to injury.
Jacqueline Boyer - Tom Pillibi (1960)
Genre: Eurovision Pop
Original thread page: 95
Date originally submitted: 18th February 2014
Original poster: mushymanrob
Comments:
We've just had an English language version of the French song that was a co-winner of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, so how about a French language version of the French song that was the outright winner nine years earlier?
France won the 1960 Eurovision Song Contest with this very, very quaint song, but as Gallic quaintness does rather appeal to me, how can Tom Pillibi by Jacqueline Boyer be anything but a real guilty pleasure?
Solomon Burke - Keep A Light In The Window Till I Come Home (1967)

The magnificent Dusty Springfield with a flawless interpretation of a great Randy Newman song.
Eric Burdon and the Animals - Mama Told Me Not To Come (1966)
Genre: Rock

Date originally submitted: 15th April 2014

Comments:
Let's follow one great Randy Newman composition with another. While I do actually prefer the 1970 hit version by Three Dog Night, I can't deny that the Eric Burdon version from four years earlier is pretty darn good.
Anthony Newley - Sweet Love Child (1969)
Genre: Pop
Original thread page: 99
Date originally submitted: 15th May 2014
Original poster: Vabosity
Comments:
David Bowie and Anthony Newley are two very different types of singer, and yet the former often cites the latter as a major influence. Just like Bowie I too am a great admirer of Anthony Newley, an actor turned singer and songwriter who had a string of hits in the late fifties and early sixties with a mix of novelty ditties and conventional pop songs, but all sung in his very own unique and unconventional way. Sweet Love Child, which was recorded a good few years after Newley's chart heyday, is a rather twee song, so it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I like it a great deal. The song was specifically written for inclusion in a long forgotten 1969 film directed by and starring Newley, the very bizarre and somewhat pretentious, but wonderfully titled Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness?
Aretha Franklin - Evil Gal Blues (1964)
Genre: Soulful Jazzy Blues
Original thread page: 100
Date originally submitted: 19th May 2014

Comments:
This is the 100th and final track to be repeated in Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review, and what better way to finish than with the fabulous Aretha Franklin.
Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review has now been completed.
I did what I said I'd do at the start of the Review. I have repeated one track from each of the first 100 pages of the thread. All repeated tracks are ones that I like a great deal and none of them have previously been repeated in either my First or my Third Anniversary Reviews.
It was good to be posting to this thread again after quite a long absence. I'm going to take a bit of a break now, but I will resume posting at some point in the future, although I don't know exactly when.
In the meantime, keep listening to all the good tracks that Rob is submitting every day. - #3160cheers for that vabosity, its nice to pop back and see whats already been posted. theres so many good acts that need deeper investigation.

I have heard 'Mexicali Rose' and 'Never Goodbye' once or twice on oldies radio, but certainly not 'Marcheta' nor 'A Little Love A Little Kiss'. The only Karl Denver track that gets played on oldies radio on a regular basis (and these days it's more semi-regular than regular) is 'Wimoweh'.
Also, 'Wimoweh' is the only Karl Denver track that is likely to appear on a sixties compilation album.
Oh, by the way, you've supplied the wrong link for 'Marcheta'. Here's the right one:-

Having instant access to all this music is a wonderful thing, but what about the artists and musicians who make it?
We're big believers in rewarding their creativity. That's why we came up with a way to fairly compensate them for the music featured on Spotify. If they stop, the music stops. To us, it's a no-brainer.
